-The Helsinki Process is a source of inspiration for the peace process on the Korean Peninsula: President Moon

Touching upon the fact that Finland's Presidency of the Council of the European Union during the latter of the year 2019 has been very successfully, Finland envoy Eero Suominen conveyed Finnish Presidency proposed greater EU investment in building a sustainable future.

Through Finland's 102nd Independence Day diplomatic reception which was celebrated on Dec. 3rd evening at a downtown Hotel Seoul while more than 200 esteemed guests from the diplomatic, business, and academic communities were present, Suominen also mentioned that the two presidents between Korea & Finland engaged in extensive discussions on a wide range of areas, including the development of bilateral ties, inclusive growth, the peace process on the Korean Peninsula and global cooperation in addition to the 4th industry revolution's cooperation agendas, start-ups and gender equality etc. by President Moon's Finland official visit during the middle of last June.

What was most noteworthy among Finland Amb. Suominen's speech, was that the Embassy of Finland Seoul also aimed to increase sustainability as one of its Embassy priorities during this year.

According to EU2019.Fl(Finland's Presidency of the Council of the European Union) website, “Investing in the new priorities is important so that we can address the challenges of climate change, create sustainable growth in Europe and protect the security of our citizens comprehensively. At the same time we must recognise the special needs of regions and support agricultural development,” explains Finnish Foreign Minister Tuppurainen.

Citing increases in bilateral trade and people-to-people exchanges as well as the launch of a direct flight between Busan and Helsinki which will be started at the beginning of next year, Vice President of the ROK-Finland parliamentary friendship group, Mr. Jong-hwan Do expressed expectations for even greater increases in exchanges of people and goods.

Do said that the two countries have many common similarties in terms of the facts that maintained national identity despite of foreign aggression, achieved stella economic development despite of their poor resources, and last but not least acquired their independence with indomitable willingness. Touching upon that Finland ranked No.1 in the world in terms of anti-corruption index and economic creativity index etc., to name just a few, Do also pointed out that Korea has many things to learn from Finland in the field of education as well.

As regarding the Helsinki Process President Moon & his Finnish counterpart dealt with during their Summit in June, this year, Finland has taken the lead in promoting international peace, according to the Blue House.

“The Helsinki Process initiated by Finland is what helped put an end to the Cold War and facilitated reconciliation between the Eastern and Western blocs. It is a source of inspiration for the peace process on the Korean Peninsula.”, President Moon said according to the Blue House. It is said that President Moon extended his appreciation to the Government of Finland for consistently supporting the Korean Government’s efforts in regard to the peace process on the Peninsula, asking for its continued interest and support, also according to the Embassy of Finland. Saying he believes that the success of the peace process on the Korean Peninsula constitutes the whole world's success, President Niinistö expressed his active support, Eero conveyed.

During the ceremony of the Finland 102nd Independence diplomatic reception, the President of Republic of Finland, Mr. Sauli Niinistö has conferred Mr. Soo-gwon Kim, former Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the Republic of Finland, the decoration of Commander Grand Cross of the Order of the Lion of Finland. Ambassador of the Republic of Finland to the Republic of Korea, Mr. Eero Suominen handed the decoration to Ambassador Kim at the Finnish Independence Day celebration held on December 3, 2019 in Seoul.
