--Great expectations about the upcoming ASEAN-Korea 30th anniversary commemorative Summit

To develop & upgrade bilateral relation into substantial & partnership relationship with Korea, I will do my best as Singapore Amb. duty during my term, said new accredited Singapore envoy Eric TEO who hosted his welcome reception for the Seoul Diplomatic Corps. as well as Korean partners on last Thursday(Sep. 19th evening) at Grand Hyatt Seoul Grand Ballroom.

Foremost, he showed great expectations about the upcoming ASEAN-Korea 30th anniversary commemorative Summit to be held in Pusan, Korea at the end of Nov. this year, adding the room for cooperating between Korea & Singapore will be great with this forthcoming commemorative Summit as another impetus.

Between the two nations are facing low birthrate and ageing society, the two countries are natural partners in terms of fin-tech, SMEs, innovation, smart city etc, to name just a few, the new Singapore envoy said. Before coming to Korea as new Singapore envoy, TEO served as director-general responsible for Northeast Asia within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Singapore during last 5 years when Trump-Kim Jung-eun Summit, Xi Jinping-Ma Ying-jeou etc. took place, referring to indirect relations with Korea.

Former Korean foreign ministers such as Han Seung-joo, Song Min-soon & Yun Byung-se including chairman Rep. Lee Suck-hyn who serves as chairman of Korea-Singapore parliamentary Friendship Group were on hand, reflecting high attention about the arrival of new Singapore envoy to Korea. For reference, Singapore has diplomatic ties with over 150 countries and plays an active role in the regional and global communities such as UN, WTO, APEC, ASEAN etc.

According to Singapore MFA, Mr Teo joined the Singapore Foreign Service in 1996. He has served in various capacities in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, covering Northeast Asia and ASEAN. From August 2014 to May 2019, Mr Teo was Director-General of the Northeast Asia Directorate.

Prior to that, he was Deputy Trade Representative in the Singapore Trade Office in Taipei, followed by a posting to the Singapore Embassy in Beijing as Deputy Head of Mission. Mr Teo was First Secretary in the Singapore Embassy in Tokyo from 1999 to 2002.

Mr Teo graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Arts (Upper Honours) in 1996. In 2005, he obtained a Master Degree in International Public Policy from Johns Hopkins University, United States of America. In 2010, he graduated from an Executive Programme at the Peking University, People’s Republic of China. Mr Teo is married to Mdm Kim Min Jae and they have a son and a daughter.
