- Korea is a key partner for Ireland in the fields of commerce, investment, education, job creation, cooperations in international organizations: Minister Josepha Madigan for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht

Through Ireland St. Patrick’s Day 2019, the Embassy of Ireland Seoul celebrated its shared Irishness, its culture, heritage and history, inviting Minister Josepha Madigan for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht from Ireland as its guest honour for the official reception and other St. Patrick’s day promotion activities in Korea this year.

Expressing her deep impressions about Korea’s dynamism through her first trip to Seoul, Madigan stated that Korea is a key partner for Ireland by her impressive speech of Ireland St. Patrick’s Day reception, held in a Yeouido area hotel Seoul last Monday(March 18) while on the other hand, also revealing her big expectations regarding Korea-Ireland Symposium in Sejong City.

Touching upon Korea’s Prime Minister Lee Nak-yeon’s Ireland official visit to Ireland at the end of May last year, Madigan said Lee’s visit served as a good opportunity which pledged for the two nations to go forward for collaborating in the fields of commerce, investment, education, job creation, cooperations in international organizations, to name just a few.

Moreover, by talks with Ireland Prime Minister Leo Eric Varadkar as well as President Michael D. Higgins last year, the two counterparts discussed the two countries’ cooperation ways for the denuclearization on the peninsula and permanent peace settlement, according to the Prime Minister Office Seoul.

In a courtesy call to President Higgins, Prime Minister Lee exchanged opinions about political situations on the Korean peninsula, climate change as well as green growth cooperaions, expressing Korean Government’s gratitude about Ireland Governemnt’s constant support regarding Korea’s peace initiatives.

In Sejong City symposium regarding academia-industrial cooperations at home & abroad for the sake of expansion of growth engine, administration-centered complex city held next day(March 19) while Ireland Minister Josepha Madigan for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and Amb. Julian Clare were on hand, Director Simon G. Willams from Global Relations Office, Trinity College Dublin presented A Historical University on the International Stage: How Trinity College Dublin functions globally.

Looking portray fact and figures about Trinity College Dublin, the University of Dublin, Williams presented Trinity’s role with Ireland as a multinational Hub and Dublin as a global hub including ideas to innovation and jobs, areas of excellence, global partners etc.

Secondly, Mr. Chris Keely, Ph.D, Sr Business Development Manager from the Office of Corporate Partnership & Knowledge Exchange, Trinity Research and Innovation, Trinity College Dublin spoke about Industry Academic Engagements: Trinity College leads Europe in success with graduate entrepreneurs.

Through case studies and examples of successful innovations, start-ups and business relations built upon research excellence and commercial impact etc., Keely focused on the success that Trinity College, the University of Dublin, Ireland, has in instilling a culture of entrepreneurship and enterprise on the university campus and within its research institutes.

On one hand, Ireland Amb. to Korea Julian Clare was also very busy during its St. Patrics’s Day week period with laying a wreath at the Irish memorial set up at the War Memorial of Korea, central Seoul to remember those born in Ireland and of Irish heritage who died during the Korean War (1950-53).

At least 109 Irish-born soldiers died serving with the Royal Ulster Rifles and at least 30 Irish-born U.S. soldiers died during the war, according to the embassy. The event was organized by the Irish Embassy in Seoul and supported by the Irish Association of Korea, UN Korean War Allies Association and the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs of Korea.

Separately from the events of the Embassy of Ireland, Irish Korea Association promoted Irish culture by holding its annual St. Patrick’s day festival in Shindorim D-Cube, Seoul which allowed Korean general public to experience Ireland’s culture, music, and sports exhibitions etc.
