H.E. Alexander Timonin, Russia Amb. to the Republic of Korea

The Russian Federation welcomes the results of the talks held by the Chairman of the State Council of the DPRK Kim Jong-eun and the US President Donald Trump on June 12 in Singapore. We proceed from the fact that normalization of US-North Korean relations, which is reflected in the final Joint Statement of both sides, is an integral part of the complex settlement of the problems of the Korean peninsula, including nuclear issue.

We positively assess the statement of the US President about the inappropriateness of conducting military exercises in the negotiation process. We are convinced that the cessation of provocative actions is a necessary step towards reducing the level of tension around the Korean peninsula, creating the atmosphere of trust.

For our part, we will continue to make active efforts to maintain political and diplomatic process around the Korean peninsula and we urge our partners to start working on the modalities of multilateral consultations, which ultimate goal is to create a solid peace and security mechanism based on the legitimate interests of all the states of Northeast Asia.

And besides, we are convinced that one of the most important components of the normalization process in the region can and should be the modification of the sanctions regime of the UN Security Council regarding DPRK. Moreover, in the relevant sanctions resolutions the Council's readiness to adapt to this kind of changes in case of obvious positive dynamics of the situation was repeatedly confirmed. This could become a serious assistance to the political and diplomatic settlement in the Northeast Asia region.

Senegal Amb. Mamadou Gueye FAYE
