"Your Excellencies, senior diplomats & their families all are experiencing the capital of the future on the Korean peninsula": Governor Kim from Yeoncheon County

Yeoncheon Paleolithic Festival is evolving into an oversea famous festival beyond a kind of domestic festival nowadays as a total of 45 diplomats including honorable ambassadors & many senior diplomats from the Seoul Diplomatic Corps. joined its famtour programs this year.

 

Invited by Yeoncheon Country in partnership with its media partner NDNnews(www.ndnnews.co.kr) as well as Korea Culture Ambassador Friendship Association, visiting Diplomatic Corps. enjoyed Typhoon Observatory, Yeongang Gallery, paleolithic festival venues of Yeoncheon which show its very long history of about 350,000 years ago and last but not least Jaein Waterfall etc. to the fullest, according to their impressions of participants.

 

Visiting Diplomatic Corps. to the 26th Yeoncheon Paleolithic Festival including DMZ trip included Bulgaria Amb. Petar Andonov, Kyrgyz Amb. Kylychbek SULTAN, Zambia Amb. Wulbur Simuuisa & Mme., DHM Gulmat Khan Zadran from the Embassy of Afghanistan, DHM Nash at Al-Hadid from the Embassy of Jordan, two Madams such as spouse Mrs. Lan-Hinh Tran from the Embassy of Vietnam and many commercial attaches such as AICEP Head Ms. Joana Neves from the Embassy of Portugal as well as Agriculture Counsellor Mr. Anthony Snellen from the Embassy of the Netherlands etc.

Yeoncheon lies in the center on the peninsula. So Governor Kim Kyu-sun said in his welcome remarks for the ambassadors & senior diplomats held in the multipurpose hall of the Jeongok Prehistory Museum in the afternoon last Friday(May 4th) that Your Excellencies, senior diplomats & their families all are experiencing the capital of the future on the Korean peninsula because Yeoncheon will serve as the center for the Republic of Korea in the unified future.

After having arrived Yeoncheon in the morning last Friday, visiting diplomatic community heard the briefing about Yeoncheon county from an arranged tour interpreter in advance on the route to the Typhoon Observatory that Yeoncheon is the town meaning plenty of waters, this region belonged to North Korea before the Korean war and was reincorporated into South Korea territory after the war and last but not least its 99% are military facilities implying many potentials for development.

Thanks to recently reconciliation atmosphere between the two Koreas by the Panmoonjeom Declaration, Yeoncheon is expected to bring many developments in terms of its tourism demand or its DMZ trip as well among others, said tour interpreter Choi Byung-soo within the limousine bus.

Taepung Observatory, the first destination, attracted more biggest interest from the visiting diplomatic community because of recent Summit effect of the 3rd South-North Korea Summit in our presumption.

It was built by the Taepung military unit on Dec. 3, 1991. It is located on Suribong Peak, the highest peak of Mt. Biggisan 65km away from Seoul and 140km away from Pyeongyang.

At first, the south limiting line and the north limiting line were established at the point 2 km away from the Military Demarcation Line, but as North Korea installed an iron railing near by the MDL in 1968, South Korea also installed an iron railing in part in 1978. On the day of good sight, you can see the North Koreans working in the fields without a telescope.

After touring Yeongang Gallery as well as well-prepared buffet luncheon, visiting diplomatic community was greeted by Governor Kim Kyu-sun, Yeoncheon County in front of the gate, Yeoncheon Prehistory Museum.

 

 

Jeongok Prehistory Museum is a relic museum built on a place of the Paleolithic era in Jeongok-ri, a historic site which encouraged to rewrite the history of the study on a Paleolithic stone implement by the discovery of the first Acheulean hand axe in East Asia. For this purpose, Jeongok Prehistory Museum has the exhibition rooms with the relics of various themes, especially the relics of the Paleolithic era such as an Acheulean hand axe excavated from the Jeongok-ri Prehistoric Site so that visitors can systematically understand human evolution and culture of Paleolithic era.

 

By his welcome speech to greet visiting diplomatic community held at the multipurpose hall, Yeoncheon Prehistory Museum, Kim introduced that the Jeongok-ri Prehistoric Site is a prime site on the Korean peninsula for the study of Paleolithic relics and located on a hilly area at an altitude of 61 meters near Hantangang River, Jeongok-ri, Jeongok-eup.

In particular, Governor Kim emphasized that Yeoncheon county citizens are proud of its ancestors who had preserved very well their old relics dating back to 350,000 years ago.

By his return speech as the capacity of the visiting dean from the Seoul Diplomatic Corps., Bulgaria Amb. Petar Andonov said that Bulgaria also including international community is closely watching the positive development on the peninsula forged after the historic Summit between the two Koreas with big interest.

Followed Yeoncheon Jeongok-ri Prehistoric Site tours showed that the Jeongok-ri Prehistoric Site has a geological base of granite gneiss formed during the Precambrian era and a sand gravel layer (Baek-ui-ri layer) formed by stream channel deposition before the eruption of basalt is widely distributed along the Hantangang River.

Furthermore Hardened lava which was erupted in Cheonwon, Pyeonggang, etc. of Gangwon-do forms a thick basalt layer and the relics of the Paleolithic era are excavated from sedimentary layers such as clay and sand accumulated on the basalt layer, according to the director of the Jeongok Prehistory Museum.

Regarding Horogoru, it is a fortress built by blocking the eastern entry of the plateau on the triangular cliff 13 meters high formed between the Danggae saetgang River and the main stream of Imjingang river coming from the Dangpo Ferry.

 

Last but not least, visiting diplomatic famtour community dropped by Jaein Falls as their last destination. Jaein Falls is one of the representative scenic spots of Yeoncheon and a magnificent view formed by the topography of Hantangang River. It has the best scenery among Seven Scenic Views of Yeoncheon. The white bubbly current of water broken like diamonds and a swamp extending in emerald captivate viewers’ heart and are unforgettable.

 

Hantangang River meandering Yeoncheon has been formed by lava which was erupted and got cooled about 270,000 years ago and is as beautiful as a picture. Among them, Jaein Falls is famous for streams falling down from black basalt Jusangjeolli and often compared with Cheonjiyeon Falls in Jejudo Island.
